ATA Child and Family Services is for Women who have been traumatized by partner abuse (physical, emotional, or verbal) are offered individual or family counseling in a supportive climate. Our staff understands the dynamics and trauma of domestic violence victims. We work to empower women so that they can heal and recover from victimization. (The term "women" is used versus women/men because they constitute the vast majority.)
Domestic violence also puts children at high risk for psychological damage, developmental delays, learning disabilities, and behavior problems. Children are provided professional therapy services in an atmosphere that supports their healing from the trauma of growing up in a violent home. Children are seen individually and in family therapy.
Acceptance Criteria:
Any families/individuals in Dane County identifying issues relating to the effects of domestic violence and family functioning.
Time Line:
Clients seeking service should contact the agency at (608)252-1320. The receptionist will answer client calls. Clients should tell the receptionist they are calling for an ATA victims intake and the calls will be transferred to the Intake Specialist. The Intake Specialist will do an intake and screening over the phone with the client which takes approximately 20 minutes. If the client(s) seem appropriate for treatment, they are given the next available appointment that fits with their schedule. This appointment is set with a therapist with expertise and/or interest in the client's area of concern. If there is no available appointment or opening among the team, the client may be placed on a waiting list and given other options in the community. Clients are taken off the waiting list on first come, first serve basis. However, if people have strict time constraints they could have to wait longer for an opening to fit their schedule.
Referral Process:
Social workers, therapists, school staff, parents, medical persons, etc., can make a referral. We also accept self-referrals from persons over 18 years of age. Family Service is one of four agencies in the CVH program. (Children of Violent Homes) We make referrals back and forth between Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (formerly known as Dane County Advocates for Battered Women), Rainbow Project and Briarpatch. The referral source would contact the Clinical Intake Specialist at (608)252-1320. The Clinical Intake Specialist can give information about services and take referral information, but the client would still need to call and access services for themselves.
Assessment and Individual Therapy:
Assessment is usually completed in 1-2 sessions, at which time the therapist will have developed a treatment plan and gone over it with the client to work on short-term and long-term goals. The therapist determines whether the client is appropriate for our services and may refer clients out at this time if different or more extensive services are needed. Group Treatment: Clients interested in a supportive group focused on domestic violence issues would be directed to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services. They provide groups for women as well as children. Several clients seek individual therapy services with us and also attend groups at DAIS Shelter.
