The Counseling and Psychotherapy Services (CAPS) team focuses on general mental health issues on an outpatient basis. The goal of CAPS is to create change for clients through psychotherapeutic intervention. CAPS clients need to be able to benefit from insight oriented therapy that is usually brief. The CAPS team serves individuals, couples and families (this includes work with children and would most likely be in the context of work with the parent(s). Common areas of treatment are depression, physical, sexual and emotional abuse, anxiety/panic, grief/loss issues, relationship problems, family problems, self-esteem, anger management, etc. Outpatient psychotherapy can be effective in creating a change in mood, functioning and quality of life.
Intake Procedure:
Clients seeking service should contact Family Service at (608)252-1320. The front office staff will answer client calls. Clients should tell the office staff they are calling for a CAPS Intake and an appointment will be scheduled with the Intake Triage Coordinator. The Intake Triage Coordinator will do an intake and face to face screening. If the client(s) seem appropriate for treatment, they are given the next available appointment with an assessing therapist that fits with their schedule. The appointment is set with a therapist with expertise and/or interest in the client's area of concern. If there is no available appointment or opening among the team, the client may be placed on a waiting list and given other options in the community. Clients are taken off the waiting list on a first come, first serve basis. However, if people have strict time constraints they may have to wait longer for an opening to fit their schedule.
Referral Process:
Social workers, therapists, school staff, parents, medical persons, etc., can make a referral. We also accept self-referrals from persons over 18 years of age. The referral source would also contact the Intake Triage Coordinator at (608)252-1320. The IntakeTriage Coordinator can give information about services and take referral information, but the client would still need to call and access services for themselves.
Assessment:
Assessment is usually completed in 1-2 sessions, at which time the therapist will have developed a treatment plan and gone over it with the client to work on short-term and long-term goals. The therapist determines whether the client is appropriate for our services and may refer clients out at this time if alternative or more extensive services are needed.
Group Treatment:
Family Service is a part of the FACE program; a four agency cooperative effort designed to provide group services. Generally our FACE groups are offered on an ongoing basis, and this usually allows new members to join at any time. We offer two women's groups, a generalized aggression group for men and also conduct a beginnings-jail group that we do in conjunction with Catholic Charities. Groups usually meet one time per week. Some clients are only involved in group therapy and others do it along with individual counseling. Clients interested in-group services should contact the Intake Triage Coordinator at 252-1320 x 1122 or email Family Service.
